Talking to Swiss newspaper Blick, the 77-year old said, “I’m a candidate again. My mandate has ended but my mission is not finished.”
The election to be president of world football’s governing body will be held in Zurich in June next year.
Earlier in October, Blatter hesitated to confirm that he would not be contesting the next elections but hinted that he would like to continue in his current role.
Blatter regained his role in 2011 as president without any obstruction.
Several names have come up to take over as the next president including FIFA vice-president Jeffrey Webb and former deputy general secretary Jerome Champagne. But they will refrain from contesting if Blatter decides to continue.
