Lady Butterfly is a two phase encounter, which was previewed in the game’s trailers, that will test player’s reflexes, speed, and patience. This particular boss has some incredibly deadly combos, so players should study up on how each phase will play out before jumping into the fight (or if they are totally stuck). Before getting started, it is recommended to equip some shurikens, which will end up being the most effective weapons for both phases of this fight.
Note: The following guide contains spoilers for this fight and users should only read on if they have already experienced an attempt at each phase or if they don’t mind a few terrifying surprise mechanics being spoiled.
Phase One
To beat Lady Butterfly, players need to wrap their heads around how her attack strategy plays out. As mentioned earlier, Lady Butterfly operates in quick, high damage combos, but these burst attacks leave her incredibly vulnerable for a short window after they are finished. Watch out for the frequent attack that will play out as two sets of daggers are thrown at the player followed by a charge and some quick slashes. Players should also be ready for Lady Butterfly’s jumping attacks. These attacks happen after she moves to a steel wire and can easily be dodged once players recognize this pattern.
After she comes down from the aerial attack (which you’ve hopefully dodged), players should have time to land two strikes before retreating to dodge a counter attack.
Another opening in phase one to be aware of comes when Lady Butterfly performs a low slash. At this point, players should be able to easily jump over the attack and land a quick air attack.
Throughout this phase of the encounter, be sure to use the shurikens to interrupt as many combos as possible and knock her off the wires as she tries to setup aerial attacks. Save the powerful strikes for the end of her combos and this phase should go smoothly.
Phase Two
During the second phase, things get even more deadly. Phase two is triggered after the first fatal blow and players should heads to the middle of the room and face the big statue. Lady Butterfly will land and players need to be fast about throwing a quick shuriken to prevent her from summoning any illusion warriors. If the interrupt fails, dodge any attacks from the illusions and just play defense. After a bit of dodging, Lady Butterfly is going to turn those illusions into butterfly projectiles that need to be dodged. Players should sprint away and work to outrun these projectiles. They are very deadly, so the best path to survival here is avoidance until this attack is over.
Once the projectiles are gone, get back to dealing some damage to Lady Butterfly. More projectiles will arrive throughout the fight as a result of a few combos, so be ready to stop attacking and avoid those. Use the shuriken to interrupt her moves and break the combos. The key here is to avoid all the distractions and just focus on dealing some damage during the openings at the end of her combos and attacks. Don’t get caught up in an attempt to take down both her and her illusions, because that makes the fight far more difficult than it needs to be.
That’s all there is to it. This one requires a bit of patience and some careful avoidance, but should be totally manageable. Be sure to check back for more Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice strategy guides, news, and updates throughout the weekend. Until then, good luck.
